The Room

Low light,
long evenings.

A pressed-tin ceiling, deep green velvet and a back bar built for browsing. Comptons is a small room that takes its drinks seriously and itself lightly — somewhere to fall into a chesterfield and stay a while.

The main room at Comptons, looking towards the bar: an ornate pressed-tin ceiling, olive green velvet armchairs with mustard cushions, marble-topped tables and exposed brick beside a bright window.
The main room, late afternoon
In Their Words
The kind of place you plan one drink at and leave three hours later. The room does half the work and the bar does the rest.

I said "something bitter, nothing sweet" and got the best drink I've had all year. No menu required.
Marcus D. — Bitterne Park
Genuinely the prettiest ceiling in Southampton, and they don't rush you. We booked for six and stayed till close.

Everything,
before you ask.

If it isn't here, the bar team are happy to help —details are at the bottom.

Booking & arriving

Not always. We keep a good portion of the room for walk-ins, and midweek you can usually find a seat without booking. Friday and Saturday evenings from 7pm get busy, so booking is strongly recommended. Groups of five or more should always book.

Call the bar or send us an email — both are listed inFind Us. Tell us the date, time, number of guests and a contact number. We reply to email within 24 hours; if you need something same-day, please call.

Two hours as standard, two and a half for groups of six or more. If the table isn't needed after you, we'll happily leave you where you are — just ask.

No deposit and no minimum spend for standard bookings of any size. Deposits apply only to full private hire of the room.

Let us know as early as you can — a phone call is quickest. There's no cancellation charge. If you're running late, we hold tables for 20 minutes before releasing them, so a quick call keeps it yours.

No — the pavement tables are first come, first served, and they go quickly on warm evenings. Bookings apply to inside tables only.

We can seat groups of up to 14 across joined tables. Anything larger becomes a private hire enquiry — see below.

Opening hours

Wednesday and Thursday, midday until 10pm. Friday and Saturday, midday until 11pm. Closed Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. Full hours are listed inFind Us.

Twenty minutes before close, so 9.40pm Wednesday and Thursday, and 10.40pm Friday and Saturday.

Usually yes, with adjusted hours. Christmas, New Year and bank holiday times are posted on the door and on our social channels a fortnight in advance.

Drinks & food

We serve bar snacks — olives, nuts, charcuterie and cheese boards — rather than full meals. You're welcome to eat before or after elsewhere on Manor Farm Road and come to us for drinks.

A sample of the current list is inthe Pour. The full board changes seasonally and isn't published in full, because it moves too often to keep accurate — but every classic you'd expect is available whether or not it's written up.

Yes, and they're made with the same care as everything else — a dedicated zero-proof list, plus soft drinks, coffee and tea. Ask the bar for something built to taste rather than off the list.

Tell the bar team when you order and they'll talk you through the ingredients in any drink. Full allergen information is held behind the bar. Please flag severe allergies when you book so we can prepare — we handle nuts, dairy and egg on site and can't guarantee a completely free-from environment.

Please ask. Tell the bar a spirit you like and a direction — sharp, bitter, long, short — and they'll build to it. It's the best way to drink here.

Yes, in any amount, available behind the bar. They're valid for twelve months and can be used against anything we serve.

Access & facilities

There's a shallow step at the front door and the main room is on one level throughout. If you'd like us to have a portable ramp ready or hold a table with easier access, mention it when you book.

Yes — a ground-floor accessible WC, no stairs involved.

Well-behaved dogs are welcome at the pavement tables and in the lounge area. Water bowls are behind the bar. Assistance dogs are welcome anywhere in the venue.

No staffed cloakroom, but there are hooks at every table and space behind the bar for anything bulky.

Age, dress & house policy

Comptons is over 18s only after 6pm. Before 6pm, under-18s are welcome when accompanied by an adult.

We operate Challenge 25, so if you look under 25 you'll be asked. We accept a passport, photo driving licence or PASS-accredited card. No ID, no service — no exceptions, and it's nothing personal.

None. Come as you are — the room is smarter than the dress code.

Vinyl and low-volume playlists most nights — you'll always be able to hold a conversation. Occasional live sets are announced in advance on our social channels.

Cakes are very welcome — let us know when you book and we'll keep it cool and bring it out on cue. Small table decorations are fine; we ask you to skip glitter, confetti and anything that needs fixing to the walls.

Getting here & paying

Free on-street parking runs along Manor Farm Road and the surrounding residential streets, and it's generally easy to find a space in the evening. Please park considerately and avoid blocking driveways.

Yes. Several bus routes stop within a few minutes' walk in Bitterne Park, and Southampton city centre is a short taxi ride away. Directions and a map are at the bottom of the page.

We're card and contactless only, including phone and watch payments. It keeps service quick and tabs simple.

Yes — leave a card behind the bar and settle when you leave. We'll always return it before you go.

No automatic service charge. Tips are entirely optional and go to the team in full.

Private hire & the rest

Yes. The full room holds around 45 standing or 30 seated and is available for private hire on selected dates. Email us with your date, guest numbers and rough timings and we'll come back with options.

We do, for groups of six to twelve, usually before opening. Two hours, three drinks each, and everyone makes their own. Enquire by email for dates and pricing.

Call or email as soon as you notice. We hold lost property for 30 days and can arrange collection during opening hours.

We're always glad to hear from good bar people. Send a short note and your experience to our email address — no formal vacancy needed.
